OUR STORY

Welcome to Living Prairie Holistic Farm! We are Chris and Michelle Birch. We started farming our land in 1999 just north east of Blackie Alberta when we bought a raw piece of land with literally nothing on it.

 

This is where our dream of connecting with the land, becoming farmers and raising our kids in the country all began! We owe this land a lot.

Over the years we slowly built our homestead. While working the land we quickly realized that
this way of life came with a lot of hard work and a lot of ups and downs. One of us always had an of the farm job to keep us going while we were getting established and raising our family.

In 2017 we started to homestead and worked toward the goal of growing the majority of our own food right here at home. It is very important to us that our food is clean and therefore we do not use any chemicals to grow and raise delicious organic food for our family and our community.

The growing season is very short in Southern Alberta so we decided to build a tunnel greenhouse to extend the growing season as much as possible. Here Chris
spends most of his time from spring seeding, tending to all the vegetables and fruit, harvesting and processing everything ourselves.

We also raise and harvest all of our own meat. All of our animals are fed high quality organic
foods and are grass fed on our own pasture and hay field. We're proud that all of our animals live peaceful, happy lives with lots of enrichment and
space to roam. We love our livestock, treat them fairly and with respect every
day of their lives. We harvest our animals quickly and humanely with respect and reverence for their sacrifice. Peaceful animals produce good food.
